Ideal for students interested in exploring educational issues and careers related to education, the Selected Studies in Education (SSE) major is designed for students committed to having a role in social change through creative action in a variety of fields and disciplines. Enrolled students select from five focus areas:

  • Post-Secondary & Human Services Fields
  • Cultural Foundations of American Schooling: Schooling & Diversity
  • Education, Technology, & Media
  • Physical Activity: Sport, Coaching & Recreation
  • Pre-Teaching: The Study of Teaching, Learning, & Inclusion

SSE gives students the flexibility of studying and exploring a wide breadth of education related topics without having to follow a teacher certification track. Although students are not pursuing an education related certificate, the SSE major does keep a certification career pathway open by facilitating entrance into a variety of programs offering master’s degrees in K-12 teaching. This multidisciplinary program is tailored to every student’s individual interests and aspirations and prepares students for a variety of positions both inside and outside educational institutions.

Practical Experience

The Selected Studies in Education major is supplemented by a wide variety of real-world learning opportunities.

  • Intern with youth sports and fitness organizations in non-school settings such as YMCA/YWCA’s, Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs, and private and public sport/recreational facilities
  • Volunteer with community organization such as Head Start or SUNY Upstate Medical University
  • Job shadow counselors, social workers, coaches, business owners, and entrepreneurs
  • Become a member of the Wellness, Health, Exercise and Education in Life club on-campus
